2016 Cohort

Michael Amin

Michael transferred from De Anza College and majored in Molecular Cell Biology. He plans on pursuing a PhD in nueroscience and advancing medicaine in its understanding of the biochemical processes, such as protein misfolding, that underlie Alzheimer's disease. For his Miller research, he explored ways in which current innovations in the understanding of Alzheimer's disease are disseminated on a community basis to improve outcomes for patients and their families.

Dante Chambers

Dante was a Political Science transfer student from Pasadena City College. His long-term goal is to go to law school and provide legal assistance to those caught up in the criminal justice system without funds to navigate it. For his Miller Scholars research, Dante focused on the changing dynamics, both social and economic, in American cities as demographic change. His motivation came from having witnessed changes in his own community, which elicits concerns for social justice.

Alexander Ferguson

Alexander transferred from Irvine Valley College as a Poltical Economy major. He aspires to understand and maximize the potential of micro financing in its ability to provide for poverty stricken entrepreneurs. For his Miller research, he explored solutions for funding innovative, yet unsupported individuals to better diversify the funding of potential start-ups in developing communities.

Siya Green

Siya transferred from Los Angeles Southwest College as an English major. She aspires to become a Special Education teacher for high school students. For her Miller project, she explored how shyness in women may be related to their early development, including their thoughts and feelings about being belittled, and interrupted. She plans to further her education in graduate school.

Hani Hussein

Hani transferred from San Diego City College and majored in psychology at UC Berkeley. She plans on pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology and advancing the accessibility of culturally sensitive mental health care. For her Miller research, she explored the ways migration affects the psycho-social-well-being of an individual and the influence that culture has on familial transmission of risk and resilience.

Abraham Marmolejo

Abraham studied Political Science with a concentration in International Relations. Because of his past work with Model UN and other transnational programs, Abraham is focused on understanding and eliminating flaws of the USAID program. In particular, he aspires to imporve the effect U.S. food aid has on developing countries to accelerate their growth and redistribute the current budget for food aid in a more equitable and effective manner.

Tania Mora

Tania transferred from Skyline College and majored in psychology. Her lifetime goal is to help men break the psychological schemes that prevent them from reaching their true empathic selves. Throught her research, she aims to fins the intrinsic reasons that drive those psychological schemes and open doors for men to explore less violent behavior and better understand their emotions.

Chansitha Ouk

Chansitha is a single mom with two associate degrees from Gavilan College. As a child, she survived at least five near-death experiences just trying to escape the Khmer Rouge regime. Since millions have had similar experiences, her hope is to help those victimsd prosper and live normal lives, and to inspire others to use her training in Media Studies and the research skills she gained from the Miller Scholars Program.

Cody Raiza

Cody transferred from Fullerton College as a Nuerobiology major. She explored the nuerobiological bases of behaviors. For her Miller research, she hopes to enhance our understanding of the human brain and complex behaviors via research and delve into new models that may be used in the field if nueroscience.

Alexander Warren

Alexander transferred from American River College and majored in Chemical Engineering. He intends to pursue an MBA after graduating and hopes to work in management in the chemical processing industry. For his Miller project, Alex intends to study the operations of the chemical processing industry and looks forward to learning more of the business aspects involved in engineering.
