Jose Chavaria

Jose transferred from College of the Canyons as a Mechanical Engineering major. Jose engaged in research at Cal State Northridge, which helped design a portable solar panel display to teach people how solar energy is converted into electricity. For his Miller Scholars project, he designed an exoskeleton to enhance running for the able-bodied

Rodney Clayton

Rodney transferred from Los Angeles Southwest College and majored in Political Science. In 2007, he started his own business called Hoagie Hideaway, and gave seminars and workshops to teach business planning, marketing, and financial literacy to women and minorities in the Inglewood area. For his Miller Scholar project, Rodney researched strategies to overcome obstacles faced by women and minorities who are starting their own businesses. In addition, he plans to advise and assist women and minorities in Oakland who are starting their own businesses.

Marcella Jean

Marcella was a Theater and Performance Studies major who plans to attend medical school after graduating from Berkeley. Marcella plans to use her theater skills to develop a theater program to give foster youth a creative outlet and enable them to express themselves through drama.

Gilbert Lopez

Gilbert attended Pasadena City College before transferring to Berkeley, where he is majoring in Physics. He has previously researched in-vitro dissolution of pharmaceuticals, in particular with drugs used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. Gilbert's research included the synthesis of sodium iridate and its analysis via powder X-ray diffraction at each step of the synthesis to help determine the specifics of the crystal structure. He studied the electric and magnetic properties of the compound and looked for any novel behaviors. Gilbert's long-term plans are to complete a PhD and become a professor at a university.

Bushra Malik

Bushra transferred from Fullerton College and majored in Sociology at UC Berkeley. She worked for a local high school as a tutor for the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, which helps students at all levels be competitive for four-year universities. She was also on the board for the Orange County AVID Dollars for Scholars chapter. Her Miller Project included her volunteering a nonprofit organization to create a documentary film.

James Manriquez

James transferred to UC Berkeley from West Valley College. James majored in Psychology and minored in Education. For the Miller program, he researched to what degree the current methods of recruitment of Cal football players negatively impact graduation rates. After graduating from Berkeley, he intends to pursue a PhD in higher education and administration.

Caitlin Myers

Caitlin came to Berkeley from San Diego City College and majored in Anthropology. Caitlin served in the US Air Force as an Airborne Cryptologic Linguist and received the "top graduate" award from the aircrew technical training school while in the Air Force. For her Miller research,  she conducted an ethnography of the "maker" or "do it yourself" movement in the Bay Area. She interviewed at The Learning Shelter, a shelter that teaches 3d printing and other "maker" skills to homeless people.

Antonny Oliviera

Antonny transferred to Berkeley from Berkeley City College and majored in Political Science with a minor in Rhetoric. He served in the Marine Corps for four years before deciding to return to college. His long-term goals were to attend graduate school in International Relations and work for the United States government in foreign affairs. For his Miller research, he researched the ethics of the use of drones in the U.S. military and its implications on the Just War tradition.

William Roy

William transferred to Berkeley from City College of San Francisco and majored in Psychology. Having facilitated writing workshops at San Francisco Juvenile Hall for ten years, Will was interested in alternatives to detention centers for juveniles. For his Miller project, he will engage in an extensive literature review to discover characteristics of programs that have successfully reintegrated young people into their respective communities. Will's long-term goal is to complete a PhD in Psychology and teach at the University level.

Adeleine Tran

Adeleine transferred to Berkeley from San Diego Mesa College and majored in Civil & Environmental Engineering. Adeleine worked as a researcher at the Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University. She studied the feasibility of using reclaimed asphalt pavement as a replacement for traditional aggregates in Portland Cement Concrete Pavement. For her Miller project, Adeleine investigated the mechanical and durability performance of cement made partially with alternative SCM (supplementary cementitious materials) rather than Portland cement in order to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions.
